You might hate the battle royale fad. You might be disgusted by EA and their reputation for greedy microtransaction monetization schemes. However, there’s no denying it: Apex Legends is undoubtedly a blow out success for the publisher. So much so in fact that it managed to pull in 25 million registered users in just one week after its launch.

To put that into perspective, it took Fortnite, the current king of battle royale, almost three months to reach that number. Of course, Apex has a clear advantage in that Fortnite and PUBG have already popularized the genre so that there’s already a huge market for it. However, battle royale games have always been more miss than hit, which is why Fortnite sits comfortably at the top. This means that gamers are definitely seeing something special in Respawn’s entry to be paying so much attention to it.

To further prove its popularity, Apex Legends went over 2 million concurrent players on its first weekend. It’s also become very popular on Twitch, hands down beating Fortnite in viewers these pat few days. Not only that, but critics have been giving stellar reviews with near-perfect scores to the Titanfall spin-off.

So, how could an EA game with microtransactions be such a huge success? The answer is simple: EA had little to no involvement in the game. The publisher gave Respawn the freedom to go with whatever they wanted for Apex. Some people will still think that the prices of the items on offer in the in-game store are too high, and there are also loot boxes with random contents in there. The only consolation is that nothing has been pay-to-win so far.

Apex Legends is out now and is free-to-play on PC (via Origin), Xbox One and PS4.
